A Wish Upon The Gentle Breeze

A Wish Upon The Gentle Breeze

An original oil painting by Kremena Chipilova

Oil on panel

Size: 9x12 inches (23x30cm) without a frame

May 2020

This painting was inspired by a Slavic fairy tale called "The Spirit of the Steppes". A section of it is similar to the "Sleeping Beauty" story, but it is more sinister, and has larger scope overall. Abandoned on a deserted island, raised by the elements of nature, the anguished hope of the young maid seeking her way out of the Sleeping Palace echoes from the pages.

"Gentle Breezelet, soul of air,
Look not lightly on my pain;
Kindly lift me from despair,
Help me freedom to regain."

"Berenice! -- I call upon her name -- Berenice! -- And from the grey ruins of memory a thousand tumultous recollections are startled at the sound! Ah! vividly is her image before me now, as in the early days of her light-heartedness and joy! Oh! gorgeous yet fantastic beauty! Oh! sylph amid the shrubberies of Arnheim! -- Oh! Naiad among its fountains! -- and then -- then all is mystery and terrors, and a tale which should not be told."

* * *

"The teeth! —the teeth!
they were here, and there, and everywhere,
and visibly and palpably before me,
long, narrow, and excessively white..."

Edgar Allan Poe

The Three Golden Hairs

The Three Golden Hairs

An original oil painting by Kremena Chipilova

Oil on illustration board

Size: 16x20 inches (40x50cm) without a frame

January 2020

I drew inspiration for this illustration from an old fairy tale that I was told as a child (called "Vsevede" back then, which means "all-knowing"), but recently re-read as an adult. It is about the all-knowing sun and a hero who needs to get three hairs of his as a wedding present to his future father-in-law - the King, so he can marry his beloved. On the way he has to overcome a lot of challenges and find the answers to three questions that only the all-knowing Sun has.

The Painted Room

The Painted Room

Oil on illustration board

November 2019

The inspiration for this piece came while reading "The Tombs of Atuan" from Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series. This isn't really Tenar from the books, however, it's just the feeling I got from the athmosphere and the mysterious painted room. I still decided to call this piece "The Painted Room", though, because I was captivated by the spirits of the damned who are not reborn adorning the walls.

March 2020

I have a few names for this painting - "Valediction", "The Red Ribbon" and "Emberiza Aureola". They come from the various concepts that inspired me to create it. I wanted to paint just a portrait painting at first, but I kept adding themes to it and it took a life of its own.

October 2019

This little painting, called "Best Friend", marks my transition to traditional art. It is my first painting since I switched from digital. Creating this piece brought me a lot of joy and made me love painting in oils. It's about finding friendship in unexpected places - I made it for Halloween and I focused on the camaraderie spirit of a holiday when everyone can come together as themselves.
